Early History

The first Africans arrived in the English colonies in 1619, brought over as slaves to work on tobacco plantations. Over the next two centuries, the African slave trade grew exponentially, and by the time of the American Revolution, there were over 500,000 slaves in the United States.

Slavery was a brutal and dehumanizing system that had a devastating impact on the lives of African Americans. The Abolition of Slavery

The Civil Rights Movement

In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
