Clarke's early influences also included the music of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. He began writing poetry in his teens, and by the late 1960s, he was performing his work at local clubs and pubs.

In 1978, Clarke released his first album, "Disguise in Love." The album was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish Clarke as a major figure in the spoken word scene. He followed up with a string of successful albums, including "Snap, Crackle & Bop" (1980),"Me and My Big Mouth" (1981),and "This Is How It Feels" (1982).

Later Career
In the 2000s, Clarke continued to release new albums and perform live. He also collaborated with a variety of other artists, including Arctic Monkeys, Jarvis Cocker, and Beth Orton.
In 2013, Clarke was awarded an MBE for his services to literature. He continues to perform and write poetry, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential and respected poets of his generation.
