Early Life
Jack Widow was born in Sicily in 1894. He came to the United States with his family when he was a child. He grew up in a tough neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. As a young man, he got involved in petty crime. But he quickly realized that he had a talent for violence. He was soon recruited by the Mafia.
Rise to Power
Jack Widow quickly rose through the ranks of the Mafia. He became a caporegime, or captain, in the Gambino crime family. He was known for his ruthlessness and his ability to get things done. He was also a skilled negotiator and a master of extortion.
In 1931, Jack Widow became the boss of the Gambino crime family. He was just 37 years old. He was the youngest boss in the history of the Mafia.
The Castellammarese War
Jack Widow's rise to power coincided with the Castellammarese War, a bloody conflict between two rival Mafia factions. Jack Widow sided with Salvatore Maranzano, the leader of one of the factions. Maranzano was eventually defeated and killed, but Jack Widow survived the war.
The Commission
After the Castellammarese War, Jack Widow helped to establish the Commission, a governing body for the American Mafia. Jack Widow was one of the seven original members of the Commission.
The Apalachin Meeting
In 1957, Jack Widow attended the Apalachin Meeting, a gathering of top Mafia bosses. The meeting was raided by the police, and Jack Widow was arrested. He was charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice.
Jack Widow was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He served 10 years of his sentence.
Later Life
After his release from prison, Jack Widow retired from the Mafia. He lived a quiet life in Florida until his death in 1981.
Legacy
Jack Widow was a complex and controversial figure. He was a ruthless killer, but he was also a man of compassion and loyalty. He was one of the most powerful Mafia bosses in history, but he also helped to bring down the Mafia.
Jack Widow's story is a reminder that even the most powerful people can be brought down by their own actions. It is also a story of hope, that even the most violent people can change their ways.
